“A City of Beautiful Lotuses, a Two-Color River, Delicious Fish, Beaches and Rapids, Thai Scholars, Devout Buddhists, Finely Carved Candles, Prehistoric Rock Paintings, Wise Local Wisdom and Hero Memorials.”

The motto of Ubon Ratchathani can tell everything about the province. The previous episode told about Ubon Ratchathani’s history. Now it’s time for tourist attractions and beautiful architecture.

Wat Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Prao

Wat Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Prao, also known as “Wat Ruang Saeng” (illuminated or fluorescence temple), is situated on a high hill in Sirindhorn district of Ubon Ratchathani. It is simulated from the environment of Himmapan Forest or Krailas Mountain in the Buddhist stories. On the upper level, the beautiful chapel is enshrined, inspired by Wat Xieng Thong in Laos but wider. Each column is hand-drawn with the periphery designed with four lotuses and animals representing the four types of people which reflects refinement. The principal Buddha image in the chapel is re-designed by removing aura and ray of light. It is carved as a Bodhi tree behind the principal Buddha. In the evening, its beauty can be clearly seen. The highlight which stuns tourists and attracts them to visit is glowing Kalapapruek trees which are the painting behind the chapel. The best time to see it is during 18.00-20.00 hours. Get there a little bit earlier to appreciate the atmosphere.

Wat Phra That Nong Bua

Wat Phra That Nong Bua is one of the oldest temples in Ubon Ratchathani which attracts many tourists with faith and its beauty. This temple can be seen from afar as it has Sri Maha Pho Chedi, a white pagoda with gleaming gold which is very outstanding. The structure was built with brick and cement as it is inspired by Mahabodhi Vihara in Bodhi Gaya in India, yet stunning with a mix of architecture in the northeastern style created by local craftsmen. Some people call it “Phra That Chedi Sri Maha Pho” or “Phra That Nong Bua” like the name of the temple. It was built to honor of 2,500 years of Buddhism. Inside the Chedi is beautiful with the golden tone. There is a small, gold relic in the middle of the Chedi which is the former relic before the large, new Chedi was built to house it. It is in a square shape and gilded in Pala style which is one of Indian arts. It was engraved with the stories of the 500 previous lives of Buddha in rectangular frames arranged in rows separated with the design of petal of the lotus blossom. Surrounding the real Chedi are the Buddha images at all of the four sides which are beautiful and valuable.

“Hat Chom Dao”

Hat Chom Dao or Kaeng Chom Dao is a large rocky rapid of hundreds of meters. Its geography is similar to Sam Phan Bok as it is full of holes and rapids, caused by erosion of water from the Mekong River to create many eccentric shapes. Some phases are straits and rocky cliffs where the river flows, leaving a trace of the height of the tide at the cliffs. There are also other attractions like Ta Uan Cave, Ta Ma Cave, Kon Sam Sao, Chong Sao Sok, Na Tan Grand Canyon, Wat Jai Cliff, Diew Dai Cliff, Biad Sao Riff and etc. Best time to visit is during November to April or the dry season as many rapids will be shown. Get there in the morning or the evening to avoid strong sunlight.

Sam Phan Bok

Sam Phan Bok is also known as “Grand Canyon of Thailand” thanks to its beauty and natural charm. It is very popular among tourists with a large group of sand rock along Phu Phan Mountains, a range of hills along Mekong River in Thailand’s and Laos’ side. This group of rock is by Mekong River, stretching as a large delta. There are a lot of small and big holes caused by erosion from the water as Sam Phan Bok is under Mekong River during rainy season or July to October and will emerge from the water in dry season or during November to May. It will become an amazing natural wonder. Each eroded rock will become holes. Some are so big that we can get inside. When the sun almost sets, the light will be reflected from basins which is very wonderful.
