Traditional red brick versus autoclaved aerated concrete brick.

A brick is one of the important materials used in construction. Formerly, traditional red brick was widely use because it was cheap and widely sold. Until recently, manufactured autoclaved aerated concrete brick replaced traditional red brick in construction because of its outstanding characteristics.

Traditional red brick is strong, durable and has an unparalleled color. The normal size used in construction is 5.5 cm. wide,14 cm. long and 3 cm. thick. Red brick should be the same size, straight, with sharp corners and gives a vibrant noise similar to metal when in contact with each other. The number of bricks used in 1 sq. m. are between 130-145 pieces. The weak points of traditional red brick are its weight, lower noise and heat protection capabilities. It is used in areas exposed to moisture like bathrooms, kitchens or rainwater.

Autoclaved aerated concrete brick which is sometimes called lightweight brick has prominent characteristics including heat protection exothermic reaction capabilities. The volume of the brick contains tiny air bubbles which makes it lightweight and easier to work with. It also has fire and noise protection properties. The normal size used is 20 cm. wide and 60 cm. long and the thickness ranges from 7.5 to 20 cm. It can fill the area of one square using 8.33 bricks. This ensures a quicker construction process compared to the traditional red brick. It is widely used in building construction although the price is higher.

Either of the two types of brick is acceptable for construction. An important factor for consideration is to ensure the skilled workers are capable of handling either brick types.
